The small house in Vila Praia de Âncora, with just one habitable floor, a basement with access from the outside and a store making use of the roof interspace, is transformed to become a holiday and weekend home. The proposal retains the existing living area floor, renovating its finishes and restoring its original atmosphere. A dining room and kitchen are created in the basement and the roof interspace, by bringing its height to the domed limit of the wooden rafters, a sleeping alcove. Two staircases, designed at their maximum allowable size by making use of the space of a former larder and the old access to the attic, are introduced for functional purposes. The staircase is an architectural device which enables the house to be used and marks the intervention. Except for this device, the spaces retain their original informality and existing aesthetics.
